Reason to Visit Malang

Malang is the second largest city in East Java with a rapidly growing population of about 1.2 million.
This is a city of great historical significance. The oldest existing record of Malang as a regency is from the 8th century when it was the seat of government of the ancient Kanjuruhan and Singhasari kingdoms. The city officially became part of the all encompassing Javanese Mataram kingdom in the 17th century which by that time was controlled by the Dutch colonialists. Unsurprisingly given that history, there are several interesting Hindu relics in this area. The city quickly became very popular with the Dutch due to its cool climate, very attractive rural surrounds and easy reach from the main trading port city of Surabaya.
Modern day Malang, although significantly urbanised, has retained much of its historical character, remains vibrant and is regarded as by far the most attractive large city in the East Java region.
Malang Regency is located between two groups of mountains with Mount Semeru, the highest mountain on Java, and Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park to the east. The biggest attraction here must be the beautiful landscape, in addition to which there are some temples not far away.

When you travel across Java there are many beautiful cities and large towns but none are as cool and delightful to walk around as the second largest city in East JavaMalang. Famous for its cool air and the surrounding country regions, the city was commonly referred to as ‘Paris Van East Java’ because of its quaintness and magnificent colonial buildings dating from the era of Dutch colonization and was very popular with European residents during this time. The streets are wide with an airy feeling, the people of Malang accommodating and friendly, however, it is less visited by foreign travellers there days. It is one place that, in my opinion every traveller should put on his ‘must visit’ list as the array of attractions, excellent restaurants and delicious food is quite simply, beyond reproach as far as what a Javanese city has to offer. There is so much to see and do and especially in the countryside where places like TumpangTurenBatu and Singosari offer nature at its best. Then there are the beautiful beaches such as Sendang Biru BeachNgliyep Beach, and Balekambang Beach.

As a centre of tourism, Malang has various places of interest including traditional dance performances. There is so much to see and here are just a few of my suggested places to visit:

Eng An Kiong Buddhist Temple
Jami Mosque (or Agung Mosque)
Kayutangan, Saint Therese Cathedral
Singosari and Jago Temples
Kidal temple
Monument Juang’45
Kayu Tangan Complex
Senaputra Park

Besides those mentioned above, you cannot go past visiting some of these places:

Wonosari Tea Plantation
Gunung Kawi
Gunung Bromo
Coban Pelangi Waterfall
Coban Rondo Waterfall
Karangkates Recreation Park
Wendit Pool

All of the above are natural attractions and each place warrants a fair bit of time spent in each. The panoramas are magnificent and a photographers delight. Malang is also famous for being the centre of religious education. This is evident with the existence of many Islamic schools (pesantren) there, and, Malang is also home to a thriving transgender (waria) community.
